if you want to "dye" your hair, you will have to use some form of hair color. if you are thinking of kool aid, i'm assuming you want a funky color, and kool aid isn't the way to go. to get a true funky color, you first need to bleach your hair as light as you can get it, so you have a "white" canvas to work with (ie: blue on brown does not equal blue, but blue on white does). if your hair has any yellow left in it, the color will NOT turn out correct, especially with blue, as yellow and blue make green, and with purple, as purple and yellow are opposites, the yellow will dull the purple. with red, it will make it orange. "dye" doesn't have to be harsh, and most funky "dyes" are more like conditioners with color in them. the "harsh" part is the bleaching, but if you go to a licensed cosmetologist who knows what he/she is doing, it shouldn't cause too much damage (i bleached my hair from BLACK to platinum blonde with almost no breakage and didn't even get a haircut; it came down to my stylist and i knowing what we were doing).

if you are looking for a more normal color, there are natural options, like henna *ugh*. henna leaves a nasty residue, and makes it nearly impossible to get highlights later, and totally impossible to perm your hair afterward. i never recommend it, but hippies are convinced it is the natural miracle color.

i recommend seeing a professional, telling them what you want, and asking for advice. in most salons, advice is free.

you can use food coloring (be careful its messy) , peroxide ( to mae it lighter, its permanent). or buy spray on color. there is also henna dye to make it darker and its temporary

hydrogen peroxide. its used for cleaning wounds but it can also bleach your hair. some varieties of tea and coffee can also dye hair.
